“I’m thankful to Indian Minister Bhupender Yadav and his team for their skilled chairing of the climate track. As President of the G20, India displayed great leadership and patience as the group worked through formulations on each issue. Yet, time after time, flexibility was met with a brick wall. We engaged in this process hoping to advance the leadership of the G20 on climate issues. We hoped that the G20 could converge on the need to include all greenhouse gases in the next round of Nationally Determined Contributions; to support global peaking of emissions by 2025; and to agree on a formulation regarding the transition away from unabated fossil fuels, including halting construction of new coal. It’s truly unfortunate that we were not able to move the needle on these key points. I have never seen such an unprecedented disconnect between what is happening in the outside world and what is happening inside our negotiating room. Take a look at the world outside: July is the hottest month ever on record, the Mediterranean is on fire, and the water off the coast of Florida is 100 degrees. I hope and pray that in the next weeks, before our leaders come together, we can put together something that is worthy of this moment.”
