Bhutan became a member of the United Nations in 1971. Bhutan does not have diplomatic relations with any of the permanent members of the UN Security Council, including the United States. Although Bhutan and the United States have never established formal diplomatic relations, the two countries maintain warm, informal relations via their diplomatic missions at the United Nations in New York, Washington DC, and New Delhi, India.

U.S. Delivers an Additional 50,000 Doses of Pfizer COVID-19 Pediatric Vacci

The United States government has donated over 671 million COVID-19 vaccine doses as a part of its commitment to defeating the COVID-19 pandemic by getting shots into arms and saving lives around the world. On December 17, 2022, the U.S. government furthered this commitment through the delivery of an additional 50,000 doses of the Pfizer pediatric COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5 to 11 to Bhutan, in partnership with COVAX and the Bhutan Foundation.

Embassy New Delhi Bhutan Unit Chief Andrew Ou and USAID Indo-Pacific Deputy Director Mary Tyler Holmes visited Bhutan June 20 to July 9, 2022, meeting with RGoB officials, members of Parliament, civil society organizations, academics, and other leaders in Bhutan’s social and cultural realms to discuss further deepening of bilateral relations and people-to-people ties.
